Rick Gyllenborg enters his 16th season as the men’s tennis head coach at the University of Missouri-St. Louis and his 10th as the women’s tennis head coach. During his career, he has produced programs that have shown success both on and off the court.
On the men’s side, Gyllenborg boasts a career record of 148-143, guiding UMSL to eight winning seasons in the last 12 years. He recorded his 100th career victory during the 2004-05 season. Gyllenborg has led UMSL to the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament in each of the last 14 years, with its runner-up finish in 2002 being the highest.
UMSL recorded a 6-10 record last season, while making its 14th straight trip to the GLVC Tournament.
Despite a 5-13 finish during the 2008-09, Gyllenborg still saw his team earn its 13th straight GLVC Tourney bid, while coaching the league’s Player of the Year in junior Andi Dimke.
During the 2007-08 season, he guided the Tritons to the program’s third NCAA Tournament and an overall mark of 15-7. UMSL also finished second in the GLVC regular season.
Gyllenborg also directed UMSL to the NCAA Tournament in 2003 and 2002.
The 2003 team finished with a 14-7 record on the season, while placing third at the GLVC Tournament. The 2002 team went 16-5, including 7-1 in the GLVC, and earned second place finishes in the GLVC regular season and at the conference tournament.
During his 14-year tenure, Gyllenborg has coached a total of 22 all-conference players, including three Freshman of the Year and one Player of the Year selections. Academically, he has coached a total of 36 academic all-conference selections and UMSL's first ever GLVC Scholar Athlete of the Year.
On the women’s side, Gyllenborg has a 48-90 coaching record, but has seen improvement over the years, including last season, when the Tritons went 9-11 – the most wins by a women’s team under Gyllenborg’s guidance. Additionally, the squad placed fourth in the GLVC Tournament, defeating Saint Joseph’s, 5-3, to mark the program’s first GLVC Quarterfinal round win for the Tritons.
The 2008-09 season marked the beginning of a program turner for Gyllenborg, who directed the squad to an 8-10 record and the programs’ first GLVC Tournament bid since 2003-04.
Prior to coaching at UMSL, Gyllenborg coached both boys and girls tennis at the high school level and coached on the professional level in the Kansas City area for 26 years.
Gyllenborg is a graduate of the University of Missouri-Kansas City and received his masters from the University of Kansas.
