STUDENT-ATHLETE (Men's Basketball)
Chris Pilz played four seasons with the Rivermen, and played in more winning games, 72, than any other men’s basketball player in school history. He was a member of both teams, the 1987-88 and 1990-91 teams, that set the school record with 22 wins in a season. Pilz helped lead that 1987-88 team to the NCAA Division II Tournament, the last team to do so, and was named Co-MVP of the South-Central Regional that season.
Pilz is the school’s all-time steals king, holding school records for most steals in a game with eight, most steals in a season with 86 in 1990-91, and most steals for a career with 233. He holds the fourth-best single season scoring record with 574 points in 1990-91 where he averaged 20.5 points per game. He is the second all-time leading scorer in UMSL history with 1,673 points, and is one of just three players in the history of the MIAA to record over 1,500 points, 350 assists and 150 steals on his career.
In the UMSL record books, Pilz ranks fifth in career field goals made with 527, second in free throws made with 455, second in assists with 426 and second in three-point field goals with 168. He was named to the MIAA all-freshman team in 1987-88 and was the conference Newcomer of the Year that same season, and was named to the all-conference team three-times. Pilz was a two-time all-region selection and was a second team All-American in 1990-91.
