COACHING EXPERIENCE
  • Completed his 26th season as the men’s tennis head coach and his 19th as the women’s tennis head coach with the 2020-21 seasons.
  • Before UMSL, he coached both boys and girls tennis at the high school level and coached on the professional level in the Kansas City area for 26 years.
 
COACHING HIGHLIGHTS
Men
  • Boasted a career record of 251-208, guiding UMSL to 17 winning seasons in the last 22 years, and eight NCAA Tournaments, including three straight from 2014-16.
  • Led UMSL to the GLVC Tournament in each of the last 24 years it was held, with its runner-up finish in 2002 being the highest.
Year Highlights
  • His 2018-19 Tritons finished with a 14-7 record and earned an NCAA Tournament bid, while senior Rob White was named the ITA Midwest Region Most Improved Player.
  • UMSL earned the program's seventh trip to the NCAA Regionals to cap to the 2017-18 season, in which the Tritons finished 12-5 overall. UMSL earned a national ranking of No. 48.
  • During the 2016-17 season, Gyllenborg coached freshman Ben-Hur Kasprzak to GLVC Freshman of the Year and ITA Midwest Region Rookie of the Year honors.
  • Gyllenborg led UMSL to a 17-6 record in 2015-16, which included the program's third straight trip to the NCAA Tournament and a final national ranking of No. 45.
  • His 2014-15 team also earned a trip to the NCAA Tournament behind an 11-9 record, while during the 2013-14 year,  UMSL posted an 11-8 mark and garnered the program’s fourth trip to the NCAA Tournament. The Tritons ended the season ranked No. 41 in the ITA Division II National Rankings and were fifth in the ITA Midwest Regional Rankings.
  • Despite a 5-13 finish during the 2008-09, Gyllenborg still saw his team earn its 13th straight GLVC Tourney bid, while coaching the league’s Player of the Year in junior Andi Dimke.During the 2007-08 season, he guided the Tritons to the program’s third NCAA Tournament and an overall mark of 15-7. UMSL also finished second in the GLVC regular season.
  • Gyllenborg also directed UMSL to the NCAA Tournament in 2003 and 2002. The 2003 team finished with a 14-7 record on the season, while placing third at the GLVC Tournament. The 2002 team went 16-5, including 7-1 in the GLVC, and earned second place finishes in the GLVC regular season and at the conference tournament.
 
Women
  • Gyllenborg has a 156-143 coaching record, but has led the program to nine straight winning seasons, including three NCAA Tournament appearances during that time.
Year Highlights
  • During the 2018-19 season, he saw junior Marina Prediger earn the program's highest national singles ranking of 36, while the doubles tandem of Prediger and sophomore Leticia Lunge were ranked as high as No. 14.
  • The 2017-18 team wrapped up a historic season with a loss in the national quarterfinals as the Tritons advanced to the NCAA Championships for the first time in program history before finishing with a 17-6 record. UMSL played in the program's first GLVC Tournament Championship title match and earned NCAA Regional wins over Wayne State and Grand Valley State. The Tritons then posted a 5-0 victory over Queens (NY) in their first-ever national match. UMSL ended the year ranked No. 22 and went 5-3 against nationally ranked opponents.
  • The 2016-17 team posted a 14-3 mark, including a 5-1 record in GLVC play to earn a share of its first-ever GLVC West Division regular season title. The team made the program’s second-ever NCAA Tournament appearance and earned their first national ranking, debuting at No. 49.
  • The 2015-16 team tied the program record for wins with a 17-7 record, while the 2013-14 team also finished 17-7, earning their first-ever NCAA Tournament bid. UMSL also finished third in the GLVC Tournament.
  • During the 2011 season, Gyllenborg directed UMSL to a 9-11 record and a fourth place showing in the GLVC Tournament, where the Tritons defeated Saint Joseph’s, 5-3, to mark the program’s first GLVC Quarterfinal round win.
  • The 2008-09 season marked the beginning of a program turner for Gyllenborg, who directed the squad to an 8-10 record and the program’s first GLVC Tournament bid since 2003-04.
