Volleyball Wins Season Opener Before Falling to No. 23 West Florida

EVANSVILLE, IND. – The University of Missouri-St. Louis volleyball team opened the 2014 season with a 3-1 (25-13, 22-25, 25-16, 25-16) victory over Ohio Dominican in the opening match of the Dunn Hospitality Invitational, hosted by Southern Indiana, on Friday morning. The Tritons then suffered a 3-0 (25-18, 25-21, 25-22) loss to No. 23 ranked West Florida later in the afternoon.
 
UMSL (1-1) will close out the invitational tomorrow with matches against Hillsdale and North Alabama.
 
UMSL 3, Ohio Dominican 1
The Tritons hit .226 in their season debut, receiving 10 kills from junior Hannah Miller, who did not commit an error in 17 attempts.
 
UMSL hit .200 in the opening set and attacked at a sizzling .458 mark (11-0-24) in the third frame. The Panthers were limited to .085 hitting in the match, including a negative outing in two of the four sets.
 
Junior Lindsay Meyer directed the offense by dishing out 35 assists and also tallied eight digs, while senior Emily Bragaw registered 23 digs.
 
Junior Jessica Ploss led the squad with three blocks and added seven kills, while sophomore Jory Siebenmorgen and junior Carly Ochs finished with eight and seven kills, respectively.
 
West Florida 3, UMSL 0
Miller recorded her second straight 10-kill match, while Meyer notched her first double-double of the year with 26 assists and 13 digs.
 
West Florida (2-0) tallied 45 kills and hit .263, while the Tritons hit at a .171 clip, registering 39 kills.
 
Miller recorded five of her kills in the second set, including one to tie the score at 20-20 before the Argonauts closed the frame with a 5-1 run.
 
The Tritons led by as many as three points in the final set, but a kill and a service ace from West Florida gave the Argonauts a 19-18 lead they would not relinquish. UMSL hit .281 in the third set.
