KANSAS CITY, MO. – Senior
Alexis Lawrence scored a game-high 17 points to help the University of Missouri-St. Louis women's basketball team to a 60-47 Great Lakes Valley Conference road win on Thursday night.
The Tritons, who were playing the first of four straight road games, improve to 9-9 overall, including 5-5 in the GLVC. Rockhurst slips to 8-10 and 2-8 in the GLVC.
Junior
Kelly Kunkel added 13 points and five rebounds, while junior
Amber Daly followed with 12 points, six rebounds, five assists and two steals.
UMSL closed out the final 7:18 of the first half on an 11-4 run to take a 31-23 lead into halftime. Lawrence scored nine of those points, tallying 15 in the first half. Defensively the Tritons held Rockhurst to 2-of-10 shooting from the field during their run. UMSL made six of its first seven shots and connected at an even 50 percent clip in the first half.
After a Kunkel three-pointer gave UMSL a double-digit lead at 35-25 early in the second half, Rockhurst scored five unanswered top pull within 35-30, but the Hawks would go more than eight minutes until their next field goal and the Tritons built their lead to 45-32 after four straight from Daly at the 9:28 mark.
Two more Daly free throws at the 5:55 mark gave UMSL its largest lead of the game at 49-35, but back-to-back three-pointers from Rockhurst ignited an 8-1 run as the Hawks trimmed the deficit to 50-43. However, the hosts would get no closer as UMSL went 8-of-8 at the free throw line.
The Tritons shot 38.3 percent in the contest after a 23.8 percent outing in the second half as UMSL made just two field goals in the final 11:17. However, the Tritons scored 12 of their final points at the charity stripe and were 19-of-25 (76 percent) from the line, including 17-of-21 (81 percent) in the second half.
UMSL owned a 45-24 rebounding advantage, including a 17-8 edge on the offensive end and held a 15-4 advantage in second chance points. Seniors
Kelly McGovern and
Tierra Snow pulled down nine boards each, while redshirt freshman
Jordan Fletcher snagged seven boards and tallied three blocks and two steals.
The Tritons limited Rockhurst to 35.8 percent shooting and held an opponent under 50 points for the fifth time this season.
UMSL will continue its four-game roadtrip by staying out west on Saturday to visit William Jewell.
