ALLENDALE, MICH. – One first half goal was all Quincy needed to defeat the University of Missouri-St. Louis women's soccer team, 1-0, on Friday night in first round action of the NCAA Tournament.
The Hawks improve to 14-3-4 and advance to Sunday's second round against host and defending national champion Grand Valley State, while UMSL sees its season end with a 12-5-4 record. The Tritons were making their first NCAA Tournament since 1983.
The goal for Quincy came in the 17
th minute and was just one of two shots placed on goal in the game by the Hawks. UMSL outshot Quincy, 21-9, with many of its attempts from coming distance. The Tritons placed six shots on goal with Hawks goalie Megan Swanson stopping each one.
The Tritons had a pair of shots on target in the first eight minutes, including one each from seniors
Cassie McFadden and
Sidney Allen, but Swanson was there for the stop both times.
UMSL took 15 of its shots in the second half, four of which were on goal. Junior
Kayla Delgado had a good look in the 84
th minute, but her attempt from a distance was saved, while senior
Laura Hurlbut attempted one last shot from nearly 30 yards out in the closing minute that was also saved.
Junior
Taylor Tosovsky took a team-high five shots, while senior
Hunter Wagoner fired four. Delgado took three, placing two on goal.
Senior
Megan Ohm played all 90 minutes in between the posts, recording one save.
