ST. LOUIS, MO. – Three players scored in double figures to help the University of Missouri-St. Louis women's basketball team to a 79-55 season-opening win over visiting Georgetown College on Saturday evening.
Junior
Robneisha Lee netted 15 points, going 9-of-10 at the free throw line, and also collected four steals, while senior
Kelly Kunkel and junior
Shea O'Brien added 14 points each.
The Tritons (1-0) recorded 17 steals, forcing 24 Georgetown (2-3) turnovers, and took advantage of their opponents' miscues, outscoring their guests, 35-8, in second chance points.
UMSL took a 41-31 lead into half after owning a 22-17 advantage at the end of the first quarter. The Tritons used a 10-0 run to take a 17-7 lead late in the first quarter before the Tigers finished the stanza on a 10-5 run to close the gap.
A 9-2 run by the Tritons in the second quarter gave UMSL its largest lead of the half at 39-27 with 2:05 to play. Lee scored four of her 11 first half points during that stretch.
The Tritons outscored the Tigers, 12-2, to start the third quarter and took a 53-33 lead four minutes in. Kunkel scored five of those points, capping the run with a three-pointer, while junior
Sydney Bloch scored four points. The Tritons owned a 62-45 lead after three quarters of play.
UMSL recorded 21 assists on 27 field goals with O'Brien dishing out six assists and picking up three steals. Bloch added five assists and five steals, while senior
Amber Daly also had five assists.
UMSL continues its season-opening two-game homestand on Tuesday, hosting Lindenwood at 5:30 p.m.
