Screaming Eagles Fend Off Tritons in Three-Set Win

EVANSVILLE, IND. – The University of Missouri-St. Louis volleyball team dropped a hard-fought 27-25, 25-18, 28-26 battle at Southern Indiana Saturday afternoon in Great Lakes Valley Conference action.
 
The Tritons slip to 13-15 overall, including 7-8 in GLVC play, while Southern Indiana improves to 19-9 and 8-7 in the league. Both teams entered the day in a three-way tie for eighth place overall in the GLVC standings with Truman State.
 
Freshman Maddy Russell led UMSL with a match-high 13 kills. The Tritons recorded 45 as a team, but hit .170 to Southern Indiana's .260. The Screaming Eagles posted 49 kills and tallied six service aces.
 
Senior Lindsay Meyer tallied 36 assists and eight digs, while senior Erin Walker finished with 12 digs. Junior Lexi Rogers recorded five blocks as UMSL held a 9-4 advantage in that category.
 
Southern Indiana fended off six set points in the first set and scored three straight to get the win. UMSL had rallied from a 17-14 deficit by scoring seven unanswered, which included two kills each from Rogers and Pezze to take a 21-17 lead. Back-to-back kills from Ploss later gave UMSL a 24-19 lead, but the Screaming Eagles answered with five straight to knot the score at 24-24. The Tritons got to set point again at 25-24, before USI's final run of the frame.
 
The Tritons also had three set points in the third set, including 27-26 before Southern Indiana scored the final two points for the match victory.
 
UMSL will play its third straight road match in three days tomorrow at Kentucky Wesleyan in nonconference action.
