Men's Basketball Prevails Over Trevecca Nazarene in OT, 94-91

ST. LOUIS, MO. – Senior Brandon Marquardt equaled his career-high with 26 points, while junior Tre Hymer added a career-high 21 points as the University of Missouri-St.  Louis men's basketball team held off Trevecca Nazarene, 94-91 in overtime, on Saturday at the Maryville Classic.

Marquardt scored nine of his points in the extra period, including five in the final minute. His sixth three-pointer of the game with a minute to play gave UMSL a 90-87 lead it would not relinquish, while his two free throws with 14 seconds remaining helped seal the victory. Trevecca Nazarene had a three-point attempt rattle in and out at the buzzer that would have forced a second overtime.

UMSL evens its record at 5-5 and will face Saint Leo tomorrow at 1 p.m. in its final game of 2015, while Trevecca slips to 4-7 overall.

Redshirt freshman Joshua Webster added 18 points, one off his career high, as the Tritons shot 60 percent from the floor, including 65.4 percent in the second half. The Trojans shot 48.5 percent after a 54.8 percent first half and were just 3-of-8 from the floor in overtime. The Tritons were 3-of-5 from the field and 6-of-6 at the free throw line in the extra five minutes. UMSL was 14-of-18 at the line in the game.

Hymer scored six of UMSL's first eight points to open the second half as the Tritons turned a 42-42 halftime tie into a 50-45 advantage two minutes in. Later, an 11-0 run capped by four straight points from Webster put the lead into double figures at 66-57 with 12:17 to play.

Then after a lay in by junior DeAndre Holmes made it 72-61 in favor of the Tritons with 8:29 to play, Trevecca used an 18-9 run over the next 6:12 to knot the score at 79-79 before sending the game into OT on a layup with nine seconds to play. Marquardt missed a potential game-winning three-pointer as time expired.

UMSL recorded 27 assists on 36 field goals with junior Joseph English dishing out eight to go with six rebounds, while Webster recorded seven assists. Marquardt added five assists, six rebounds and two steals.
