ST. LOUIS, MO. – Southern Indiana used a late run to pull away from the University of Missouri-St. Louis women's basketball team on Thursday night in Great Lakes Valley Conference action en route to a 59-48 win over the Tritons.
Holding a three-point lead with1 1 minutes to play, the Screaming Eagles used a 10-2 run, capped by seven unanswered points, to extend their advantage to 51-40 with just under five minutes remaining. Meanwhile, the Tritons suffered through a seven minute 41 second drought without a field goal. Senior
Kelly McGovern ended the streak at the 3:15 mark to trim the deficit to single figures, but USI followed with five straight.
Southern Indiana clung to a 28-27 halftime lead after an opening half that featured six lead changes and eight ties.
UMSL slips to 11-11 overall, including 7-7 in the GLVC, while Southern Indiana improves to 19-5 and 11-3 in the league.
The Tritons shot 38.1 percent and owned a 34-31 rebounding advantage, while the Screaming Eagles shot 39.2 percent, including 52.2 percent in the final 20 minutes after netting just 28.6 percent in the first half.
UMSL was plagued with 22 turnovers and Southern Indiana took advantage, outscoring the Tritons, 23-10, in points off turnovers.
McGovern recorded her third double-double of the season with 12 points and 11 rebounds and also recorded three steals and three assists, while junior
Kelly Kunkel tallied her third straight and fourth double-double of the season with 17 points and 10 rebounds.
UMSL returns to the court on Saturday, hosting Bellarmine at 1 p.m.
