INDIANAPOLIS, IND. – The University of Missouri-St. Louis men's basketball came up short in an 87-71 loss at No. 9 ranked Indianapolis on Thursday night in Great Lakes Valley Conference.
In a game that saw 11 lead changes and 14 ties, no team was able to put together a sustainable run until the Greyhounds did so late in the second half. After junior
Derek Williams connected on a three-pointer with 8:29 to play to put the Tritons on top 60-59, Indianapolis followed with an 8-1 run, including five straight after a technical foul was assessed to the UMSL bench to take a 67-61 lead it would not relinquish. The Tritons pulled within 67-66 on a pair of senior
Derek Shouse free throws with 6:17 remaining, but would get no closer. The Greyhounds outscored the Tritons, 28-9, over the final eight minutes.
UMSL slips to 15-7 with the loss, including 7-5 in the GLVC, while UIndy improves to 18-2, including 10-2 in the GLVC. The Greyhounds also improve to 11-0 at home this season.
Junior
Kevin Swanson led the Tritons with 16 points off the bench, while Shouse finished with 10.
UMSL shot 40.4 percent, while UIndy connected at a 51.9 percent clip, including 66.7 percent in the second half. The Greyhounds also owned a 39-33 rebounding advantage despite a 16-8 offensive edge by UMSL with the Tritons owning a 13-0 advantage in second chance points. Senior
Aareon Smith pulled down 10 rebounds.
The first half featured seven ties and six lead changes and ended in a 33-33 halftime tie. The Tritons owned a 16-9 lead midway through the first half as UIndy started just 2-of-8 from the field. The Greyhounds then followed with eight unanswered to pull ahead 17-16 with 7:50 to play.
UMSL committed a season-high 22 turnovers and the Greyhounds outscored the Tritons, 28-16 in points off turnovers.
Junior
Brandon Marquardt came off the bench to dish out six assists and added two steals and nine points.
UMSL will close out its current four-game roadtrip at Saint Joseph's on Saturday.
