Softball Sets School Record for Home Runs in a Season in Sweep at Maryville

ST. LOUIS, MO. – The No. 3 ranked University of Missouri-St. Louis softball team closed out a 10-game roadswing with two victories at Maryville on Tuesday in a pair of Great Lakes Valley Conference contests, winning 8-5 and 5-0.

UMSL, coming off 13 home runs in its last outing at William Jewell on Sunday, delivered another eight today. The Tritons now have 66 home runs this season, which betters last season's school record of 62.

The Tritons have won nine straight and improve to 27-3 overall, including 12-2 in the GLVC, while Maryville slips to 7-20 and 4-10 in the league.

UMSL returns to the field on Friday, hosting Truman State at 12 p.m.

GAME 1: UMSL 8, Maryville 5
The Tritons overcame a slow start and won the contest with three homeruns in the top of the seventh inning to erase a 5-4 deficit.

The Saints wasted no time getting on the board as Nicole Taylor led off with a solo home run.

The Tritons got the run back in the third inning with senior Jena Boudreau's RBI single, but a two-run home run from Kyrstal Rock made it a 3-1 game in favor of the Saints.

Senior Hannah Wessels knotted the score in the fifth inning with a two-run homer, while senior Brianna Butler drove in sophomore Alex Stupek for the 5-4 lead.

Maryville tied it in the bottom of the frame and took a 5-4 lead in the sixth before UMSL's rally in the seventh with all three long balls coming consecutively with two outs. Stupek knocked out a two-run shot with Wessels on base, while Butler and senior Madison Zbaraschuk followed with solo shots.

UMSL finished with 11 hits, including four home runs and one double, and received two-hit, two-RBI games from Wessels, Stupek and Butler.

Senior Brittni Chapman picked up the win in relief, working four innings. She allowed two runs on six hits, while junior Hannah Perryman went three innings in the start and uncharacteristically allowed three runs on three hits, including both Maryville home runs. She also struck out seven.

Game 2: UMSL 5, Maryville 0
Perryman redeemed herself in the nightcap with the complete game one-hit shutout, striking out 13. She retired the final 18 batters she faced, allowing just one other baserunner via a walk.

Offensively, the Tritons scored all five runs on home runs, including a two-run blast from Butler in the sixth. It was her team-leading 13th homerun, one shy of the single season record 14 she set last season. The long ball was also Butler's career-leading 45th.

Senior Jena Boudreau tallied her first home run of the season in the third inning, while senior Katie Wood also knocked one out in that frame. Freshman Jennah Perryman capped off the scoring with a long ball in the seventh – her 11th of the season.

Wessels went 2-for-3 at the plate, extending her hitting streak to 10 games, as the Tritons registered six hits.
