ST. CHARLES, MO. – The University of Missouri-St. Louis women's basketball team saw its season come to an end on Friday night with a 77-65 loss to No. 3 seed Southern Indiana in quarterfinal round action of the 2015 Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament at Family Arena.
The No. 6 seeded Tritons end their season with a 14-14 record, while the Screaming Eagles improve to 24-5 and advance to tomorrow night's semifinals against No. 2 seed Lewis.
Senior
Alexis Lawrence scored 20 points in her final game for UMSL, including scoring her 1,0000
th career point, which came at the 16:10 mark in the first half. She becomes the 14
th player in program history to accomplish that feat. Lawrence netted four three-pointers in the loss, finishing the season with 94 and her career with 226, both of which rank second on their respective charts.
Senior
Tierra Snow added 13 points, 12 of which came in the second half and closes out her UMSL career ranking second all-time in career field goal percentage. Snow also pulled down a team-high 11 rebounds for her third double-double of the season.
The contest also marked the final game for senior
Kelly McGovern, who recorded eight points and seven rebounds. She graduates ranking in the top five all-time in career assists and free throw shooting percentage and in the top 10 in steals.
UMSL rallied back from a 15-point deficit in the contest, pulling within five, but would get no closer as Southern Indiana shot 59.1 percent in the second half, including 71.4 percent (5-of-7) from three-point range. The Screaming Eagles owned a 35-22 halftime lead and took its largest lead of the contest 32 seconds into the final 20 minutes.
Despite the early USI bucket, the Tritons used a 13-8 start to open the second half and pulled within 43-35 four and a half minutes in and after a three-pointer by Southern Indiana, the Tritons reeled off six straight, cutting the deficit to 46-41 after freshman
McKena Miller's steal and layup at the 12:20 mark. UMSL got within five two other times over the next two minutes, including 50-45 following a pair of
Jordan Fletcher free throws, but the Screaming Eagles followed with a 10-3 run, notching a pair of three-pointers to extend their lead to 60-50 with 7:52 to play.
Miller finished with a season-high six points, while junior
Amber Daly tallied eight points despite playing just 19 minutes in picking up five fouls.
After five ties and a pair of lead changes early, the Screaming Eagles used a 10-2 run to take an 18-1lead at the 8:26 mark in the first half. Lawrence followed with a three-pointer before Daly's layup brought the Tritons within 19-17. However, UMSL would miss its next eight shots and USI used a 14-3 run to build a 33-20 advantage with just under two minutes to play. The Tritons went just 1-of-10 from the field in the final seven minutes to finish the opening half shooting 30 percent.
UMSL finished the contest shooting 43.3 percent after a 56.7 percent outing in the second half, while Southern Indiana shot 48.1 percent. The Tritons held a 34-32 rebounding edge.
TRITON TIDBITS: UMSL is 5-10 in GLVC Tournament games… the Tritons were playing in their second straight quarterfinal round game… Southern Indiana improves to 30-8 all-time against UMSL and has won 11 straight in the series, which includes a 59-48 win during the regular season.
