INDIANAPOLIS, IND. – The No. 3 University of Missouri-St. Louis softball team rebounded from a 3-2 game one loss at No. 10 Indianapolis on Saturday with a 6-1 win in the nightcap. The game two victory keeps the Tritons atop the Great Lakes Valley Conference standings.
A two-out error in the bottom of the seventh in the opener led to three unearned runs for the host Greyhounds who rallied from a 2-0 deficit to win. Sophomore
Kelsey Bailey then picked up her first career win in the circle in the capper.
UMSL moves to 38-4 overall, including 23-3 in the GLVC, while UIndy is 35-9 and 20-4 in league play.
The Tritons will close out the regular season at home next weekend, hosting No. 15 ranked Southern Indiana on Saturday and Bellarmine on Sunday. Both doubleheaders begin at Noon.
GAME 1: Indianapolis 3, UMSL 2The Greyhounds took advantage of a leadoff walk in the bottom of the seventh and a two-out Tritons fielding error to plate three unearned runs en route to the win. The error led to the Greyhounds' first run, while Taylor Weck followed with a two-run walk off double for the win.
Both UMSL runs came by way of solo home runs from seniors
Katie Rutledge in the third and
Brianna Butler in the seventh.
Junior
Hannah Perryman (20-3) suffered the loss in the circle, which snapped a string of 11 straight victories. She took a perfect game into the fifth inning and retired the first two before allowing back-to-back singles, ending her streaks of 46 consecutive batters retired and 15.1 perfect innings. Perryman scattered four hits, walked one and struck out 13. She has gone 32 innings without allowing an earned run. Perryman's 13 strikeouts also put her at 1,041 for her career, which ranks 25th all-time in NCAA DII history.
Rutledge also finished with an infield single to account for two of UMSL's three hits as Morgan Foley struck out 16, improving to 26-4 in the circle.
The loss snapped a school-record 19 game win streak.
GAME 2: UMSL 6, UIndy 1Bailey pitched seven scoreless innings in relief, scattering six hits, walking one and striking out a career-high seven.
Offensively, the Tritons tallied nine hits, including two from Butler, who added another home run, a solo shot to lead off the fifth inning. It was her team-leading 18
th of the season and 50
th of her career and extended UMSL's lead to 4-1. Butler finished with three RBIs, driving in two insurance runs with a single in the sixth inning that resulted in the final score.
Senior
Hannah Wessels also recorded two hits and collected her two RBIs in the second inning with a single to right field that put the Tritons ahead 2-1.
A
Katie Wood solo home run in the fourth accounted for UMSL's other run.
The Tritons now have 94 home runs this season, the 10
th most in an NCAA Division II single season.
