Volleyball Drops Four-Set Match to GLVC East Division Leader Lewis

 
ST. LOUIS, MO. – The University of Missouri-St. Louis volleyball team took one set from Great Lakes Valley Conference East Division leader Lewis on Saturday afternoon, but dropped a 3-1 decision to the Flyers. Lewis won by set scores of 25-16, 18-25, 25-15, 25-21.
 
The Tritons slip to 5-7 overall, including 2-2 in the GLVC, while Lewis, winners of 11 straight, improve to 12-1 and 4-0 in the league.
 
UMSL was limited to .108 hitting as the Flyers put up 11 blocks. Freshman Maddy Russell tallied 12 kills, while senior Jessica Ploss recorded eight kills, hitting a team-best .357. Senior Hannah Miller added seven kills without committing an error.
 
Senior Lindsay Meyer dished out 18 assists and picked up 17 digs.
 
Lewis served up three of their four aces in the first set as the Tritons struggled with sever receive. The Flyers also hit .286 with 14 kills, while UMSL recorded nine kills behind a .125 attack percentage.
 
The Tritons then used eight straight points to close out the second set en route to the win, scoring four of those on kills, including two from sophomore Gina Pezze, who finished the match with seven kills and 10 digs.
 
The third set saw Lewis tally 15 kills with no errors for a .455 hitting percentage.
 
The Flyers took an early 8-4 lead in the fourth set, but UMSL rallied back to take a 13-12 lead on a Ploss kill. However a Lewis kill and three straight UMSL attack errors swung the lead back to the Flyers at 16-13. The Tritons got within one point five different times, including 20-19, before Lewis closed out the set by outscoring UMSL, 5-2.
 
Lewis was led by freshman Elizabeth Hyland's match-high 15 kills and Nicole Yuede's 28 digs. The Flyers hit .230 as a team.
 
UMSL will close out its current three-match homestand on Tuesday night, hosting crosstown foe Lindenwood in non-conference play.
