ST. LOUIS, MO. – Lewis' Max Strus drilled a three-quarters-court shot as time expired to lift visiting Lewis to a 71-68 win over the University of Missouri-St. Louis men's basketball team on Saturday afternoon in Great Lakes Valley Conference action.
Strus collected a throw in from the Tritons with 2.2 seconds remaining and heaved the ball up, banking in the game-winner.
The Tritons trailed by five with 1:19 seconds to play, but a layup from redshirt freshman
Joshua Webster pulled UMSL within two, while a three-pointer from redshirt sophomore
Andreas Kefalas knotted the score at 68-68 with 17 seconds to play as the Flyers were just 1-of-5 at the free throw line in the final 79 seconds.
After Kefalas' three-pointer, Lewis turned the ball over and with fouls to give, fouled the Tritons twice, including with 2.2 seconds left leading to the inbounds play in which UMSL looked to lob it in for the tip in.
Kefalas finished with 15 points and six rebounds, while senior
Brandon Marquardt scored a team-high 16 points. Junior
Joseph English added 10 points, seven rebounds and five assists.
UMSL slips to 6-10 overall, including 0-7 in the GLVC, while Lewis improves to 12-4 and 4-2 in the league.
The Flyers took a 38-30 lead into halftime, using a 15-2 run over a five minute, 23 second stretch to turn a 15-10 deficit into a 25-17 advantage with 6:14 to play. UMSL was limited to 35.5 percent shooting in the opening 20 minutes, while the Flyers shot 54.5 percent.
The Tritons finished the game at 38.5 percent, while Lewis shot 46.2 percent and owned a 45-36 rebounding advantage, including an 11-6 edge on the offensive end.
UMSL is back on the road next weekend, beginning with a Thursday contest at Truman State.
