ST. LOUIS, MO. – The University of Missouri-St. Louis men's basketball team broke into the Great Lakes Valley Conference win column on Thursday night, defeating visiting William Jewell, 68-51.
The Tritons limited the Cardinals to 28.8 percent shooting and had nine players in the scoring column.
UMSL, which has lost six league games by five or fewer points, improves to 7-12 overall, including 1-9 in the GLVC. William Jewell had a two-game win streak snapped with the loss, while slipping to 7-11 and 2-8 in the conference. The Cardinals are now 0-5 in road games this year.
Redshirt freshman
Joshua Webster scored 14 points and pulled down eight rebounds, while junior
Hunter Reine followed with 12 points and eight rebounds. Senior
Brandon Marquardt also scored 12 points, while dishing out four assists.
UMSL outscored William Jewell 8-0 to close out the first half, which included a three-pointer at the buzzer by senior
Tre Ogles, to take a 35-27 lead into halftime.
The Tritons then led by eight twice in the first two and a half minutes of the second half before William Jewell pulled within 43-42 at the 13:15 mark. UMSL later scored eight unanswered, including six straight by redshirt sophomore
Andreas Kefalas, to post its first double digit lead at 57-46 with 3:17 to play.
The Tritons shot 42.1 percent and received 23 points from the bench, while committing just five turnovers, equaling a season-low.
William Jewell held a 43-40 rebounding advantage, including a 13-7 edge on the offensive end.
UMSL continues its current four-game homestand on Saturday, hosting Rockhurst at 3 p.m.
