Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Kunkel and Fletcher's Double-Doubles Not Enough to Power Tritons Past Rockhurst

ST. LOUIS, MO. – Senior Kelly Kunkel and redshirt sophomore Jordan Fletcher each recorded a double-double, but it wasn't enough as the University of Missouri-St. Louis women's basketball team fell short to visiting Rockhurst, 66-63, on Saturday afternoon in Great Lakes Valley Conference action.

Kunkel finished with 16 points and 12 rebounds and Fletcher tallied 24 points and 13 rebounds, while also blocking three shots. The Tritons owned a 49-30 rebounding advantage, including a 25-11 edge on the offensive end, but only scored 15 second chance points.

Meanwhile, the Hawks knocked down 12 of 20 three-point attempts to help garner the win and also capitalized on 13 UMSL turnovers, scoring 26 points on the other end, while the Tritons scored 12 on 12 Rockhurst turnovers.

Rockhurst was led by Mary Dineen's game-high 25 points, which included four free throws in the final 26 seconds to help seal the victory.

The Hawks led by eight early in the final quarter before UMSL closed the gap to 61-58 on a steal and layup by senior Amber Daly with just under two minutes on the clock. Then after a turnover by the Hawks and a pair of misses by the Tritons, Rockhurst was fouled with 35 seconds, making just one of two for the 62-58 lead. Kunkel connected for a three-pointer from the wing to quickly pull UMSL within 62-61. Fletcher also scored on a layup with eight seconds remaining for the 64-63 deficit, but Dineen sank two free throws after each Tritons score.

UMSL slips to 7-12 overall, including 2-9 in the GLVC, with its fourth straight loss by five or fewer points, while Rockhurst improves to 12-7 and 5-6 in the league.

The Tritons limited Rockhurst to 18.8 percent shooting in the opening 10 minutes and held a 16-8 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Hawks then scored eight straight to open the second frame to knot the score 90 seconds in. Rockhurst went 6-of-7 from three-point range in the second quarter and outscored the Tritons, 25-13, en route to a 33-29 halftime lead.

The Hawks took their largest lead of the game by nine points in the third quarter and held a 51-44 lead after three quarters played.

Junior Sydney Bloch dished out eight assists and collected four steals.

UMSL will play its final two home games next weekend, beginning Thursday hosting McKendree on the annual "Pack the Stands" night.
