ST. LOUIS, MO. – Senior
Hunter Reine opened the 2016-17 season with a double-double of 17 points and a career-high 17 rebounds, but it wasn't enough as visiting Ferris State handed the University of Missouri-St. Louis men's basketball team a 73-61 loss Friday night as part of the GLVC/GLIAC Challenge, hosted by the Tritons.
The Bulldogs used a late 17-4 run to turn a 56-50 lead into a 73-56 cushion with 1:15 to play en route to the victory, making 8-of-10 field goals during that stretch. Ferris State shot 50.8 percent from the field, including 54.5 percent in the second half.
UMSL, which trailed 33-27 at the break, had pulled within three points three different times in the second half, including 47-44 on an offensive rebound and dunk by Reine with 9:51 to play.
The Tritons connected at a 38.7 percent clip and owned a 41-34 rebounding advantage, including a 16-9 edge on the offensive end and outscored the Bulldogs, 24-12, in second chance points.
Ferris State jumped out to a 10-2 lead before eight unanswered by the Tritons pulled the home team within 12-10 at the 11:44 mark. Ferris State later took its largest lead of the half at 29-20 with just under four minutes to play, but Reine and junior
D.J. White combined for UMSL's next seven points to help close the gap to 31-27.
White finished with 16 points and eight rebounds, while junior
Steven Davis dished out five assists.
