NASHVILLE, TENN. – The University of Missouri-St. Louis women's basketball team shot 50 percent from the field, but committed 23 turnovers in 72-66 loss to Kentucky Wesleyan in its final game of the Pops Duncan Classic, hosted by Trevecca Nazarene.
The Tritons slip to 1-1 on the young season, while Kentucky Wesleyan, which outscored UMSL, 27-14 in points off turnovers, improves to 1-1.
Junior
Jordan Fletcher scored 12 points, going 6-of-6 at the free throw line and 3-of-4 from the floor, and pulled down six rebounds, while junior
Shawnta Johnson added nine points and seven rebounds. Sophomore
Laura Szorenyi also reached double figures with 11 points in her first start.
Kentucky Wesleyan jumped out to an early 11-2 lead and owned a 22-10 advantage after the first quarter. The Panthers extended their lead to 13 points twice early in the second quarter before UMSL pulled within 39-31 at the break. The Tritons shot 58.3 percent from the field in the second quarter, getting nine points from Szorenyi on 3-of-3 shooting.
UMSL then connected on 7-of-10 shots in the third quarter, closing that frame with a 12-4 run to pull within 55-50.
The fourth quarter opened with a 5-1 Tritons run and UMSL pulled within 56-55 at the 7:31 mark on junior
Sammie Sproul's three-pointer. However, the Panthers followed with an 8-0 run before going 7-of-10 at the free throw line in the final 48 seconds to help seal the victory.
Kentucky Wesleyan shot an even 40 percent and owned a 35-14 rebounding advantage, including a 14-6 edge on the offensive end, but scored just 10 second chance points.
The Tritons recorded 16 assists on 23 field goals with Sproul, Dahl and senior
Robneisha Lee each dishing out three.
UMSL returns to action next Friday at Lincoln (Mo.)
