ALLENDALE, MICH. – The University of Missouri-St. Louis women's soccer team saw its outstanding season to come to an end in the NCAA Tournament Second Round on Sunday afternoon with a 2-0 loss at three-time defending national champion Grand Valley State.
The Tritons end the year with a 13-5-1 record, the program's most wins since 2003, while the No. 2 ranked Lakers improve to 20-1-1 and advance to the Midwest Region final next weekend against Truman State, which was a 1-0 winner over McKendree earlier today.
Grand Valley State got on the board in the 35
th minute on a penalty kick after the nation's leading scorer Gabriella Mencotti was taken down in the box. Clare Carlson converted the PK against Tritons keeper
Emily Rish, who went to her left while Carlson delivered the kick to the right.
Mencotti then added an insurance goal in the 55
th minute with her 28
th tally of the season.
Grand Valley State outshot the Tritons, 19-11, including 8-1 in shots on goal, as the Lakers, which have allowed just five goals all year, recorded their 18
th shutout. Rish equaled a career-high seven saves, which she also recorded in Friday's 1-0 double overtime win over Rockhurst.
Sophomore
McKayla Harder led the Tritons with four shots, while senior
Kayla Delgado took three shots, landing one on goal.
