Four-Game Win Streak Ends With 10-Point Loss at No. 13 Bellarmine

LOUISVILLE, KY. – The University of Missouri-St. Louis men's basketball team had a four-game win streak snapped on Thursday night as the Tritons fell short to No. 13 ranked Bellarmine, 81-71, in Great Lakes Valley Conference play.
 
The Knights shot 52.5 percent from the field and took advantage of 14 UMSL turnovers, outscoring the Tritons, 26-6 in points off turnovers. Bellarmine committed just five miscues.
 
UMSL, which falls to 10-13 overall, including 4-10 in the GLVC, shot 43.9 percent and held a 37-32 rebounding advantage. Bellarmine improves to 19-4 and 12-2 in the league. The Knights also improve to 14-0 at home.
 
Junior Hunter Reine recorded 15 points and 10 rebounds for his third double-double of the year, while redshirt freshman Joshua Webster also scored 15 points, while adding six rebounds and four assists. Senior Brandon Marquardt followed with 12 points and three steals.
 
Bellarmine closed the first half with a 15-2 run, capped by nine straight, to take a 41-34 lead. The Tritons held three eight-point leads in the first half, including an early 16-8 advantage through the first eight minutes and 12 seconds as both teams were slow to start. UMSL netted the first point at the 18:17 mark, but didn't get its first field goal until 16:18, while Bellarmine scored at 17:16. A three-pointer by sophomore Andreas Kefalas with just under five minutes to play in the first half gave UMSL its final eight-point lead at 30-22.
 
After Bellarmine had taken an early 11-point lead in the second half, the Tritons pulled within 53-49 on another Kefalas long ball, but the Knights answered with eight straight to push the lead back into double figures. UMSL got within eight twice, including 69-61 with 5:01 to play, but would get no closer.
 
Sophomore Max Cook dished out six assists and grabbed five rebounds, while sophomore Drew Skaggs scored a career-best nine points.
 
UMSL returns to the court on Saturday at Southern Indiana.
