Dominant Second Half, Career Highs by O'Brien and Boyce Fuel Tritons' Win at Missouri S&T

ROLLA, MO. – Juniors Shea O'Brien and Jordan Boyce each scored a career-high to help the University of Missouri-St. Louis women's basketball team to a 72-48 Great Lakes Valley Conference road win at Missouri S&T on Thursday night.
 
O'Brien tallied 22 points, including 14 in the second half, while Boyce netted 11 points. The duo combined to go 6-of-10 from three-point range.
 
It was a tale of two halves for UMSL. After 20 points and 25.8 percent shooting in the first half, the Tritons shot 60.7 percent in the final 20 minutes, while outscoring Missouri S&T, 52-32. 31 of those points came in the third quarter. UMSL scored seven straight as the teams returned to the floor to ignite an 11-2 run for a 31-18 advantage three minutes in before owning a 51-30 advantage at the end of the frame.
 
The Tritons improve to 10-14 overall, including 5-11 in the GLVC, and keeps UMSL in the hunt for a bid to the 2016 GLVC Tournament with two regular season games to play, while Missouri S&T slips to 8-15 and 4-12 in the league.
 
Senior Amber Daly added 10 points, sinking 2-of-3 three-pointers. UMSL finished with eight long balls, shooting 44.4 percent from beyond the arc, with both figures equaling season-highs.
 
The Tritons finished the game 42.4 percent from the field and held a 43-36 rebounding advantage. Missouri S&T shot 28.6 percent. UMSL was also able to capitalize on 13 Lady Miners turnovers, scoring 19 points and held a 9-0 advantage in second chance points despite both teams pulling down nine rebounds.
 
Daly, senior Kelly Kunkel and junior Simone Gillum all had six rebounds, while Daly added three assists and two steals.
 
A pair of O'Brien free throws closed out the first quarter and gave UMSL a 9-8 lead. Missouri S&T knotted it at 9-9 midway through the second quarter before UMSL used seven unanswered points to go on top 16-9at the 2:56 mark. The Lady Miners closed the half with a 7-4 run to pull within 20-16 at the break.
 
The Tritons return to action Saturday at No. 12 Drury.
