GULF SHORES, ALA. – University of Missouri-St. Louis senior pitcher
Hannah Perryman struck out 14 of the 15 batters she faced to pick up career perfect game number eight on Sunday morning as the No. 7 ranked Tritons shut down Union, 8-0, in five innings at the Gulf Coast Invitational.
Perryman tied the NCAA Division II record of eight perfect games set by Lock Haven's Kristen Erb (2006-09). Six of Perryman's perfect games came last season in which she set an NCAA single season record.
The win also gave UMSL head coach
Brian Levin his 200
th career victory in his sixth season. He is now 200-74 (.730) overall in his career with the Tritons.
UMSL improves to 4-0 overall, while Union dips to 1-7.
Offensively, UMSL recorded 10 hits, including two from freshman
Serena Olson, who homered and doubled to drive in four runs. Junior
Sara Kern also added two hits, while junior
Alex Stupek recorded her 29
th career home run, moving her into fourth place on the career charts. Each Triton player reached base in the game with eight of nine hitters recording at least one hit. Sophomore designated player
Kaitlin Fraser reached base in all three trips to the plate, drawing two walks and adding a single from the lead off position.
Five Triton runs came in a seven-hit second inning. Senior
Erin Walker, who started two years for the volleyball team and is playing softball for the first time since high school, singled to first base to drive in the first run, while Olson's three-run homer capped the scoring.
UMSL returns to the field on Tuesday with a doubleheader at Christian Brothers.
