Baseball Drops Two Games to No. 9 Quincy

ST. LOUIS, MO. – The University of Missouri-St. Louis baseball team lost both ends of Sunday's doubleheader to No. 9 ranked Quincy as the two teams closed out a four-game Great Lakes Valley Conference series.

The Hawks won by scores of 9-4 and 11-6, outhitting the Tritons, 23-15, behind four home runs.

UMSL slips to 20-10 overall, including 5-7 in the GLVC, while Quincy improves to 21-8 and 7-5 in the league.

The Tritons return to the field on Tuesday, hosting McKendree at 3 p.m.

GAME 1: Quincy 11, UMSL 6
UMSL's early lead was quickly washed away as Quincy scored 10 unanswered en route to the win. The Hawks plated three in the fifth on a three-run home run, tied it in the sixth on a solo home run and then came home four times in the seventh for the win.

After Quincy got on the board in the first inning, UMSL countered in the bottom of the frame, striking for six runs on four hits as they went to the plate 13 times. Junior Nick Ulrey recorded a three-run triple, while freshmen Matt Foster and Tom DeCero each added RBI singles. Senior Jose Ortiz also collected an RBI on a bases loaded hit by pitch.

However, that was all the offense the Tritons would get as UMSL finished with eight. Junior Jake Beckwith was 2-for-3 at the plate and added a stolen base.

Junior Jon Shanker was charged with the loss in one and one-thirds of an inning after allowing four runs on four hits.

Senior Kyle Wilson went four and a third of an inning in the no decision start, allowing four runs on six hits, while striking out three and walking six.

GAME 2: Quincy 9, UMSL 4 (game called after 8 innings due to darkness)
Quincy jumped out to a 7-0 lead after three innings, which included four runs in the second.

UMSL had a runner in scoring position in the first four innings and finally broke through in the fourth with three runs, taking advantage of four walks. Senior Justin Busekrus had an RBI single in that frame.

Busekrus added his second RBI of the game with a groundout in the sixth inning to pull the Tritons within 8-4.

Junior Kevin Smith was tagged with his first loss of the year, allowing eight runs, including seven earned, on five hits and six walks in five innings of work. He struck out five.

DeCero had a single to extend his hitting streak to 13 games, while Ortiz reached base for the 16th straight game with a single.
