Baseball Splits at Truman, Takes Opener, 8-6

KIRKSVILLE, MO. – The University of Missouri-St. Louis baseball team opened a four-game Great Lakes Valley Conference series at Truman State on Saturday with a split, taking the opener, 8-6. Truman used a walk-off in the 10th to win the nightcap, 6-2.
 
The Tritons move to 23-18 overall, including 7-11 in the GLVC, while the Bulldogs are now 16-24 and 8-10 in the league. The two teams will play another doubleheader tomorrow, starting at Noon.
 
GAME ONE: UMSL 8, Truman State 6
Junior Tanner Hudson went 4-for-5 at the plate with a two-run home run and finished with three RBIs and two runs scored as the Tritons out-hit the Bulldogs, 16-8.
 
Senior Justin Busekrus also homered in the win and finished with two hits, two RBIs and two runs scored, while senior Jose Ortiz tallied three hits.
 
A sixth-inning solo home run by Truman State knotted the score at 4-4, but in the seventh, UMSL struck for two runs, including a go ahead RBI single from freshman Matt Foster and an RBI single from fellow freshman Tom DeCero.
 
Hudson's two-run long ball gave the Tritons an 8-4 cushion and helped senior Austin Simokaitis get his 13th save, despite allowing two runs on three hits.
 
Senior Kurt McGuire improved to 7-1 on the mound, going seven and one-thirds of an inning in the start. He gave up four runs on four hits, walked four and struck out four.
 
GAME TWO: Truman 6, UMSL 2
Truman used a walk-off grand slam to garner the win in the 10th inning after the Tritons tied it up in the seventh and forced extra innings.
 
UMSL got its first two men aboard to lead off the seventh with senior JonMichael Weaver singling and junior Jake Beckwith reaching on a fielder's choice. After being sacrificed over, senior Dominic Orlando drove in pinch runner Brendan Riesmeyer with an RBI groundout for the tying run.
 
The Tritons took a 1-0 lead in the third on Busekrus' RBI single, while Truman went ahead with a two-out, two-run single in the fourth.
 
The Bulldogs held a 10-9 advantage in hits with UMSL being led by Busekrus' two hits and RBI. Weaver also finished with two hits.
 
Junior Jon Shanker suffered the loss, allowing four runs on four hits, while issuing four walks in two-thirds of an inning.
 
Junior Jake Renfrow went a season-long nine innings, scattering nine hits and allowing two runs, while striking out three and walking one.
