ST. LOUIS, MO. – Visiting Missouri S&T handed the University of Missouri-St. Louis baseball team a pair of losses on Sunday to close out a four-game Great Lakes Valley Conference series as the Tritons closed out the home portion of its 2016 schedule.
Prior to the contests, UMSL honored its nine graduating players, including
Justin Busekrus, Luke Etnier, Kurt McGuire, Zach McKenney, Dominic Orlando, Jose Ortiz, Austin Simokaitis, JonMichael Weaver and
Kyle Wilson.
The Tritons falls to 25-20, including 9-15 in the GLVC and will close out the season next week with five games beginning Wednesday at McKendree in a nonconference contest before heading to Drury Friday-Sunday for a four-game GLVC series.
Missouri S&T improved its ledger to 30-15 overall, including 15-9 in the GLVC.
GAME 1: Missouri S&T 5, UMSL 3
UMSL was limited to just four hits offensively, and defensively, committed seven errors leading to five unearned runs on nine hits.
Junior
Nick Ulrey was one of four players to tally a hit, recording a double.
Wilson was charged with the loss, allowing eight runs, including just three earned, on six hits. He also walked three and struck out three.
GAME 2: Missouri S&T 5, UMSL 3
The Miners jumped out to a 4-0 lead, scoring three runs in the third before UMSL got on the board in the bottom of the third on freshman
Gian Gomez's first collegiate home run. The Tritons added two runs in the fourth to pull within 5-3 on Orlando's RBI single, followed by Ulrey's RBI double.
Junior
Kevin Smith took the loss, allowing five runs, including three earned, on seven hits in six innings. Despite walking the bases loaded to walk the game, the Miners got just one run off Smith in the first inning.
UMSL outhit Missouri S&T, 11-9, but left nine runners on base, going 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position.
Gomez and Orlando recorded two hits each.
