ST. LOUIS, MO. – The No. 6 ranked and second-seeded University of Missouri-St. Louis softball team saw its season come to an end in an elimination game to No. 10 ranked and third-seeded Wayne State on Friday evening with a 3-1 loss in the NCAA Midwest Regionals, being hosted by UMSL.
The Tritons avoided elimination earlier in the day with a 2-0 win over sixth-seeded Truman State.
UMSL ends its season with a 53-9 record, the most victories in program history. The loss also brings to an end the outstanding four-year career of senior pitcher
Hannah Perryman. In her four seasons, the Tritons posted a 191-38 record, won three GLVC titles and made four NCAA Tournament appearances. Individually, Perryman graduates as the NCAA Division II career record holder for strikeouts (1,725), perfect games (9) and strikeouts per seven innings (12.1). She also finishes third all-time in career no-hitters (15), sixth in victories (128) and seventh in shutouts (61). Perryman also owns the NCAA DII single season strikeout record with 567 this season.
Wayne State improves to 48-8 overall and will face Maryville in the championship game tomorrow at 12 p.m. The Saints defeated the Warriors, 1-0, in 11 innings in today's first game. WSU must beat Maryville twice to move on.
Wayne State 3, UMSL 1
Wayne State's Lindsay Butler recorded two home runs to help the Warriors to the win. Butler's first long ball led off the bottom half of the first inning, while Wayne State also plated an additional run in that frame.
Perryman then retired nine straight before an error allowed another Warrior to reach base, while Butler's second round-tripper came with two outs in the fifth inning.
UMSL got its lone run on junior
Ryan Logan's solo home run in the fourth that cut the deficit to 2-1.
The Tritons finished with five hits, including two from junior
Alex Stupek.
Perryman struck out two and scattered four hits without issuing a walk.
UMSL 2, Truman 0
Perryman tossed the complete game one-hit shutout, striking five and walking two. The lone hit she surrendered was an infield bunt single.
Offensively, the Tritons recorded four hits and broke the scoreless game in the fourth inning thanks to senior
Erin Walker's speed. Walker reached on a double and was sacrificed to third before blazing home on sophomore
Jennah Perryman's infield fielder's choice, sliding head first into home before the tag.
UMSL added an insurance run in the sixth inning on freshman
Alicia Shivers' RBI triple that scored J. Perryman.
