Late Run Spurs Women's Basketball to Road Win at Kentucky State

FRANKFORT, KY. – The University of Missouri-St. Louis women's basketball team scored the game's final 10 points en route to collecting a 65-55 win at Kentucky State on Saturday in its first road test of the season.
 
Senior Shawnta Johnson recorded 15 points and nine rebounds, while freshman Alex LaPorta notched her second double-double with 13 points and 14 rebounds.

How it Happened
- A pair of free throws from Johnson gave the Tritons a 57-55 lead they would not relinquish with 3:45 to play, while Kentucky State missed all seven of its field goal attempts from there. UMSL was 5-of-6 at the free throw line in the final 2:28 to help secure the win.
- The Thorobreds took their largest lead of the game with 8:07 to go at 51-44 to cap a 6-1 start to the final quarter.
- UMSL clung to a 34-33 halftime lead. The Tritons led 20-12 after the first quarter with LaPorta making all three of her field goal attempts. Kentucky State t hen outscored the Tritons, 22-13, in the second quarter.
- UMSL shot a combined 23.3 percent in the second and third quarters, including just 15.4 percent in the third, as the Throrobreds took a 45-43 lead into the final 10 minutes.
 
Numbers of Note
- UMSL shot 31.6 percent and held a 45-36 rebounding advantage, including an 18-10 edge on the offensive end.  Johnson added nine rebounds and three assists to her stat line.
- Junior Arielle Jackson also reached double figures with 12 points to go with three assists and two steals.
- Kentucky State connected at a 38.6 percent clip.
- UMSL was 22-of-33 (66.7 percent) at the free throw line, including 12-of-16 in the fourth quarter.
