Men's Basketball Battles Indiana State in Exhibition Play

TERRE HAUTE, IND., November 22, 2017 – The University of Missouri-St. Louis men's basketball team stepped outside of regular season competition to travel to Indiana State on Wednesday night in an exhibition game in which the host Sycamores earned a 75-58 win.
 
The Tritons held Indiana State in check throughout the first part of the game and trailed by just 10 midway through the second half when Indiana State pulled away.
 
The Sycamores improve to 2-3 overall with the win in their home opener, while UMSL will resume regular season play on Saturday, hosting Robert Morris-Peoria at 3:30 p.m.
 
How it Happened
- UMSL equaled its largest lead of the first half at six points when junior Johnathan Matthews knocked in two free throws with 4:37 to play to make it 26-20. However, Indiana State followed with 12 unanswered to ignite a 17-2 run that closed out the opening half, taking a 37-28 lead at the break.
 
- UMSL got within seven points twice early in the second half and after the Sycamores took a 53-36 lead with just over 13 minutes to play, the Tritons followed with a 9-2 run to pull within 55-45 at the 10:00 minute on a three-pointer from Terre Haute native Steven Davis. But ISU answered with seven straight and never looked back.
 
Numbers of Note
- Davis and freshman Anthony Hughes had 10 points each. Hughes knocked in a pair of three-pointers for UMSL's first two baskets.
- Indiana State shot 50 percent from the field and held a 45-36 rebounding advantage, while UMSL was held to 31.3 percent shooting. The Tritons held a 15-11 advantage in offensive rebounds.
- Junior Dwayne Ward pulled down seven rebounds, while senior Elijah Watson finished with three assists and three steals.
- Indiana State committed 17 turnovers to UMSL's 14 with the Tritons outscoring the Sycamores, 14-11, in points off turnovers.
