Hot Second Half Not Enough for Women's Basketball in Loss at No. 9 Drury

SPRINGFIELD, MO. – The University of Missouri-St. Louis women's basketball team outscored No. 9 ranked Drury, 38-23, in the second half behind 59.3 percent shooting, but it wasn't enough as the Tritons dropped a 69-55 decision in the Great Lakes Valley Conference opener for both teams Thursday night.
 
Freshman Alex LaPorta recorded her fourth double-double of the year, scoring 10 points, while pulling down a season-best 15 rebounds.

How it Happened
- Drury owned a 13-11 lead after a low-scoring first quarter in which the two teams combined for 15 turnovers and 31 percent shooting.
- The Panthers opened the second quarter with a 10-2 spurt to put the lead into double figures, taking a 46-17 advantage into halftime.
- After Drury scored the first bucket of the second half, UMSL reeled off 10 unanswered to pull within 48-27 with 4:24 to play. The Tritons outscored the Panthers, 18-9, in the third frame and trailed, 55-35, heading into the final 10 minutes.
- Back-to-back layups from senior Jordan Fletcher and junior Arielle Jackson got UMSL within 16 points at 55-39 with eight minutes to go, but the Tritons would get no closer until the final score.
 
Numbers of Note
- Jackson led the UMSL offense with 16 points, while senior Shawnta Johnson added 11. Fletcher also got into double figures with 10 points.
- UMSL shot 43.8 percent, including 59.3 percent in the second half, and held a 38-29 rebounding advantage, while Drury connected at a 42.1 percent clip.
- The Tritons were plagued by 32 turnovers, which led to 30 points on the other end for the Panthers.
- Johnson dished out a career-high five assists.
