Softball Opens GLVC, Home Slates With Split to Illinois Springfield

ST. LOUIS, MO. – The No. 17 ranked University of Missouri-St. Louis softball team split with visiting Illinois Springfield on Saturday as the Tritons opened both their Great Lakes Valley Conference and home schedules. UMSL took the opener, 4-3, in 10 innings, while UIS won the nightcap, 6-1.
 
UMSL is now 19-7 overall, while Illinois Springfield is 14-11. Both teams are 1-1 in the GLVC.

How It Happened
-A walk off single to left center by sophomore Reagan Osborn brought home junior Jennah Perryman for the game-winner. Perryman led off with a bunt single.
 
-Illinois Springfield forced the extra innings, knotting the score at 3-3 in the top of the seventh on Ali Haesele's first home run of the year on the lead off first pitch. Sophomore Carly Kingery had retired 13 straight until that long ball.
 
-After Kingery worked out of a bases loaded jam in the first inning, the Prairie Stars got two runs on three hits in the second for an early 2-0 lead.
 
-Sophomore Serena Olson delivered her ninth home run of the season in the third to give UMSL a 3-2 lead.
 
Key Stats
-Osborn finished with two of UMSL's seven hits.
-Kingery improved to 10-3 in the complete game five-hitter. She struck out a career-high 13 and walked two with just one of the two runs allowed being earned.
-UIS hurler Rachel Goff retired 14 straight during the game – from after Olson's home run to a lead off infield single by junior Rachel Matthies in the eighth.

How it Happened
-Olson gave UMSL a quick 1-0 lead in the first with another solo home run, but UIS finished the game with six unanswered, including four in the fourth and two in the fifth.
 
Key Stats
-UMSL had just two hits. In addition to Olson's roundtripper, senior Sara Kern had a single.
-Freshman CoCo Caraway suffered the loss, allowing six runs on eight hits. She also walked three and struck out two.
 
Up Next
UMSL will host McKendree tomorrow  in a Noon doubleheader.
