ST. LOUIS, MO. – The University of Missouri-St. Louis baseball team posted an 8-7 victory in today's doubleheader opener against William Jewell, while the Cardinals won the nightap, 4-3, fending off a Tritons rally.
UMSL is now 9-15, including 3-5 in the GLVC, while William Jewell improves to 13-12 and 6-2 in the league.
Game 1: UMSL 8, William Jewell 7
How It Happened
- A two-out walk followed by a one-pitch RBI double gave William Jewell a 1-0 lead in the third, but UMSL erased it in the bottom of the frame, using four consecutive hits, including a two-run double from junior
Jacob Monti and an RBI single from
Jake Morsch to go on top 3-1.
-A pair of walks and three hits in the top of the fourth swung the lead back in favor of the Cardinals, 5-3, who also scored a single run in the fifth.
-Monti's first home run in the fifth tied the game at 6-6 and highlighted a four-run inning for the Tritons, who went up 8-6.

- Monti finished with two hits and five RBIs, while senior
Jake Beckwith went 3-for-3.
- Freshman
Jarrett O'Brien added two hits and scored two runs, while Vinz and Morsch each added two hits and an RBI.
- Senior
Zach Lindsay picked up the win, improving to 2-1. He went five innings, struck out five, walked four and allowed six runs on seven hits.
- Junior
Alex Oltmann earned his third save, tossing the final two innings. He scattered two hits, allowed one run, struck out three and issued one walk.
Game 2: William Jewell 4, UMSL 3
How it Happened
-Senior
Tanner Hudson helped UMSL to a quick 1-0 lead, driving in Monti in the first inning.
-Both teams plated runs in the sixth. William Jewell knotted it up in the top, while the Tritons got the lead back in the bottom on O'Brien's RBI single.
-William Jewell struck for single runs in the seventh and eighth innings to post a 4-2 advantage. The Cardiinals loaded the bases in the eighth, but reliever
Alex Oltmann worked out of the jam to prevent further damage.
-UMSL tried to rally in the ninth, but couldn't complete it. Hudson drove in one run, but the Tritons left two runners on base to end the game.
Statistically Speaking
-Senior
Kevin Smith went six and two-thirds innings in the no-decision start. He struck out six and issued no walks and was responsible for two runs on seven hits.
-Hudson finished with three hits, two RBIs and a run scored, while Monti also tallied two hits.
