Softball Defeats Emporia State in Split at ESU Classic

EMPORIA, KAN. - The University of Missouri-St. Louis softball team bounced back from a 5-3 loss to Arkansas Tech to record a 10-7 win over host Emporia State on Saturday as the Tritons opened play at the ESU Classic.

UMSL (3-3) will play two more games tomorrow at 9 a.m. against Concordia-St. Paul and at 11 a.m. against Missouri Southern State.

Game 1: Arkansas Tech 5, UMSL 3
UMSL out-hit Arkansas Tech, 10-8, but left 12 runners on base.
 
All three runs came in a three-hit third inning as eight players went to the plate. Junior Chelsea Martinez drove in one run with an RBI single, while senior Jennah Perryman had an RBI fielder's choice.
 
Freshman Sapphire Munoz was tagged for the loss, allowing four runs on five hits in one and one-thirds of an inning. The Golden Suns (7-2) scored once in the first and three times in the second.
 
Sophomore CoCo Caraway allowed just one run on three hits in four and two-thirds of an inning, while striking out three.
 
UMSL left at last one runner on the base paths in each of the seven innings, including three in the fourth when the Tritons loaded the bases with one out.
 
Junior Madi Sundling led the offense with three hits, including two doubles, while Martinez added two hits. Junior Reagan Osborn added a double and drew two walks.

Game 2: UMSL 10, Emporia State 7
UMSL battled back from a 6-2 deficit after five innings to defeat the Hornets (5-5) with a seven-run sixth inning that featured a two-run homer from Perryman and a three-run shot from redshirt sophomore Morgan Hill. The Tritons tallied eight of their 16 hits in that frame with Perryman also picking up a single.

Hill finished the game with five hits and five RBIs, while Perryman tallied three hits. Hill also accounted for UMSL's single runs in the first and seventh innings.

Sophomore Andee Tiffee earned the win in the circle, tossing the complete game. She allowed seven runs on 11 hits, struck out 10 and walked four.

Five of Emporia State's runs came on four hits in the fifth inning that gave the home team the 6-2 lead.
