KISSIMMEE, FLA. - The University of Missouri-St. Louis baseball team ended a 10-game trip to Florida with a pair of losses to Wayne State (Mich.) on Saturday. The Warriors won 8-3 and 6-3.
UMSL (5-8) will play its next five games at home, beginning Thursday with a doubleheader against Bemijdi State.
Game 1: Wayne State 8, UMSL 3
Junior
Tom DeCero went 3-for-3 at the plate, accounting for half of UMSL's hits, and helped the Tritons to an early 3-1 advantage before the Warriors scored seven unanswered to garner the win.
UMSL scored twice in the bottom of the third, including one on an RBI single from redshirt junior
Brian Seymour, and took advantage of a WSU error in the fourth to make it 3-1.
However, two Triton errors in the fifth led to two Wayne State runs, which tied the game at 3-3, while another error in the sixth gave the Warriors a 4-3 advantage. Wayne State then opened the game with a four-run, five-hit seventh inning.
Senior
Kevin Smith struck out a season-high eight despite being tagged for the loss. He went six innings, scattered seven hits and allowed six runs, although just three were earned.
Game 2: Wayne State 6, UMSL 3
Like the first game, UMSL saw Wayne State rally for the win, scoring six unanswered to erase the Tritons' 3-0 lead.
Freshman
Jayce Timmerman made it 1-0 in the third with an RBI groundout, while in the fourth an RBI double from DeCero and an RBI groundout from freshman
Xavier Collier stretched the advantage to 3-0.
Wayne State scored three runs each in the fourth and sixth innings.
DeCero added another two hits in the second game as UMSL was out-hit 10-7.
