Baseball Sweeps William Jewell on Saturday to Win Series

ST. CHARLES, MO. – Seniors Kevin Smith and Jim Brandt each threw a complete game to help the University of Missouri-St. Louis baseball team sweep William Jewell on Saturday to take the Great Lakes Valley Conference series, 3-1. UMSL won the opener, 8-5, and took the finale, 6-1.

Game 1: UMSL 8, William Jewell 5
The Tritons took advantage of three Cardinals errors with just one of their eight runs being earned.
 
UMSL came home on three wild pitches, while redshirt sophomore Derrick Freeman used a double and a triple to drive in three runs.
 
Senior Kevin Smith picked up his first win in the complete game effort. He scattered six hits, allowing three earned runs and struck out five, while walking two.
 
UMSL recorded eight hits, including two each from Freeman and junior Tom DeCero.
 
Game 2: UMSL 6, William Jewell 1
A fielding error and an RBI single from senior Cooper Vinz helped UMSL to a quick 2-0 lead in the first inning, while two more runs came home on three hits in the sixth to make it 4-1. Senior Jacob Monti doubled to score freshman Josh Shoemaker, while Monti came home on freshman John Hilpert's RBI fielder's choice.
 
William Jewell's second error of the game – and its fifth of the day – led to another UMSL run in the eighth extending the lead to 5-1, while a Hilpert sac fly in the eighth accounted for the final score.  
 
Senior Jim Brandt improved to 3-0 with the complete game victory, allowing just one run on eight hits, while striking out four without issuing a walk.
 
DeCero and senior Jake Morsch had two hits each as UMSL recorded nine. Shoemaker scored two runs, while Hilpert had a team-high two RBI.  
 
Series Notes: DeCero finished with eight hits, batting .533, while Morsch and Seymour had five hits each… UMSL out-hit the Cardinals, 36-31… Freeman was 3-for-3 in stolen bases.
 
Up Next: UMSL will host Illinois Springfield on Tuesday in a single, non-conference game at 3 p.m.
