KISSIMMEE, FLA. – The University of Missouri-St. Louis baseball team came up short on both ends of a doubleheader against Grand Valley State on Wednesday in the Sunshine State Games, falling 8-6 and 7-3 to the Lakers.
UMSL slips to 5-4 overall and returns to action tomorrow night against Minnesota Crookston at 6:30 p.m. (EST). Grand Valley State improves to 6-4.
GAME 1: Grand Valley State 8, UMSL 6
A three-run home run by sophomore
Jarrett O'Brien in the top of the third inning was part of a five-run, five-hit inning that gave UMSL a 5-1 advantage. The Tritons also scored on senior
Jacob Monti's sac fly and freshman
John Hilpert's RBI single in that frame.
However, Grand Valley State countered with a five-run bottom of the third to retake the lead, 6-5, and added two more runs until UMSL got one back in the sixth when O'Brien delivered a bases loaded two-out RBI single to account for the final score.
Grand Valley State out-hit the Tritons, 10-7. O'Brien finished 3-for-4 with four RBI and a run scored.
GAME 2: Grand Valley State 7, UMSL 3
The Tritons were limited to four hits, which included a two-run home run in the second inning that tied the game at 2-2.
Freshman
AJ Davis brought in UMSL's other run with a two-out RBI single in the fifth inning that made it 3-3, but the Lakers followed with four unanswered, including three in the sixth.
