No. 18 Men's Basketball Edged by Top-Ranked Bellarmine

LOUISVILLE, KY. – The No. 18 ranked University of Missouri-St. Louis men's basketball team saw its 13-game win streak snapped on Thursday night with a 65-60 loss at No. 1 ranked Bellarmine.
 
The Tritons were flagged with 23 fouls, allowing the Knights to go 25-of-31 at the free throw line. UMSL was just 5-of-6 at the line.
 
The Tritons found themselves down 11 with four minutes to play and rallied to cut it to three, but couldn't complete the comeback.
 
Junior Yaakema Rose Jr. led all scorers with 18 points.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Bellarmine took a 34-28 lead into halftime, closing the first frame with an 11-2 run. The Tritons, who had four players with two fouls each, went 5:40 without scoring during that run.
 
Rose Jr. scored 16 first half points and netted his first four field goals to tally 11 of UMSL's first 14 points. He would later hit a three-pointer at the 7:10 mark that gave the Tritons a 26-23 lead before their scoring drought.
 
In the second half, a pair of buckets by redshirt sophomore Kellen King made it a one-point game twice, including at 45-44, but the Knights followed with an 8-2 run, scoring all eight points at the free throw line as Rose Jr. and redshirt sophomore Steve Webb each picked up their fourth fouls. Seven straight points later pushed the Bellarmine advantage into double figures at 60-49 with six minutes to go.
 
UMSL got within 63-60 with 1:07 remaining after scoring eight unanswered and had the ball with 17 seconds to go before the Knights forced a turnover.
 
The Tritons, who shot 43.6 percent, committed 17 miscues, the second most this season. Bellarmine shot 42.1 percent and were limited to 33.3 percent in the second half after hitting 50 percent in the first half.
 
UMSL owned a 34-25 rebounding advantage, including a 14-7 edge on the offensive end.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Junior Jose Grubbs added 14 points.
  • Redshirt junior Jason Towery added nine points and eight rebounds, while Webb finished with six points, eight rebounds and six assists.
 
UP NEXT
UMSL hosts No. 23 Indianapolis on Saturday in its only home contest during a seven-game span.
