LaPorta and Berry Record Double-Doubles in Win Over Southern Indiana

ST. LOUIS, MO. – Juniors Alex LaPorta and Danielle Berry each had a double-double on Thursday night as the University of Missouri-St. Louis women's basketball team posted a 72-64 victory over visiting Southern Indiana in Great Lakes Valley Conference play.
 
LaPorta notched her sixth double-double of the season with 16 points and a season-high 14 rebounds, while Berry's was her second with 12 points and 11 boards.
 
Berry scored nine of her points in the fourth quarter on three three-pointers, including two in a 9-2 run that gave UMSL a 64-57 lead with 5:09 to go that it would not relinquish.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Southern Indiana led 24-22 at the end of the first quarter and 39-36 at the half. The Tritons led by four in the second quarter, but 10 unanswered by the Screaming Eagles helped the guests to the halftime advantage.
 
Seven unanswered midway through the third quarter gave the Tritons a 47-43 lead before they took a 51-48 advantage into the final 10 minutes.
 
A quick three-pointer from Berry extended UMSL's lead to 54-48 to open the fourth quarter. The Screaming Eagles knotted it back up at 55-55 with just over seven minutes to play before UMSL's 9-2 spurt. The Tritons made 6-of-8 free throws in the final 1:22 to help seal the game.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • UMSL had five players in double figures, including sophomores Kiara Stewart (15 points), McKenzie Lathrom (11 points) and Faye Meissner (10 points).
  • UMSL shot 44.4 percent and owned a 45-33 rebounding advantage, while Southern Indiana shot 36.9 percent.
  • Stewart added eight rebounds.
  • Berry dished out five assists.

UMSL has won two straight at home… UMSL had lost two straight to USI and 15 of the last 16… the Tritons have won two straight for the second time this season.
