Truman State Snaps Women's Basketball's Win Streak

KIRKSVILLE, MO. – The University of Missouri-St. Louis women's basketball team came up short at Truman State on Saturday in a 63-58 Great Lakes Valley Conference loss that snapped its four-game win streak.
 
The host Bulldogs used a dominant third quarter, outscoring the Tritons, 23-8, to help garner the victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED
UMSL took a 28-24 lead into halftime after a first half that saw them own a 28-15 rebounding advantage, including a 12-2 edge on the offensive end. The Tritons grabbed nine of those "o" boards in the first quarter and scored six second chance points for a 10-9 leader after the opening frame.
 
UMSL posted its largest lead of the game with 4:16 to go in the first half when sophomore McKenzie Lathrom capped a string of six unanswered with a jumper for the 24-17 lead.
 
Truman State opened the third quarter with a 21-3 start, which included 16 unanswered, to take a 45-31 lead before holding a 47-36 advantage going into the final 10 minutes.
 
Junior Alex LaPorta scored six points during a 9-0 stretch early in the fourth quarter that trimmed the deficit to 49-45 with 6:24 to play, but a 9-2 Truman run put the lead back into double figures with just over a minute remaining.
 
The Tritons didn't go down quietly, pulling with 61-58 on a three-pointer from redshirt senior Laura Szorenyi with nine ticks on the clock.

  • UMSL shot 31.1 percent and held a 46-40 rebounding advantage, including a 20-8 edge on the offensive end, while Truman State shot 41.1 percent.
  • Szorenyi (18 points), LaPorta (14) and sophomore Kiara Stewart (12) all finished in double figures.
  • Stewart hauled down a career-high 16 rebounds, including 10 on the offensive end.
 
UP NEXT
UMSL plays its final two regular season road games next week, traveling to McKendree on Thursday and to Southern Indiana on Saturday.
