Friday's contest between the UMSL Tritons and Rockhurst Hawks soccer programs pitted two teams looking to beef up their 2021 resumes.
The Tritons are coming off a 1-0 win at home against the Quincy Hawks, and the Hawks of Rockhurst came into the tilt on a 2-0-1 run.
While both teams fared well in regulation, the double overtime match ended in a 1-1 draw, as the Tritons found the net 13 minutes into the contest when
Emma Sitton found
Jalyn Richardson, who juked in and out of the defense, just moments removed from a
Paige Schwartz save in the box.
The Hawks found pay dirt 10 minutes into the second half when Gabby Hennessy's shot appeared to be a cross from the far seam, only to curl its way into the upper left post.
The Tritons head into Sundays road match at William Jewell drawing on positives. One of which is staying true to the plan, playing Tritons soccer.
"Very proud of how the team played. We produced more chances and played our style of soccer better than we have all season. I thought Jalyn was very dangerous in our attack and was able to keep the defense on its heels," UMSL head coach
Maddi Moon said. "She is constantly looking to interchange with the wide forwards, so it really makes it hard to mark. I also thought
Mia Milazzo added a great threat in our attack from the attacking mid position. We were more willing to take people on one-on-one and it was something on which we had been working."
Holding a lead, no matter the sport or venue, is an arduous task, but having multiple scoring opportunities down the stretch of both overtime periods is another facet in which the team looks to build.
The defense, once again, helped keep the team in the thick of things from the onset.
Added Moon: "We had a lot of chances, of course, I wish we could've finished those, especially through the overtime periods. [We] just need to stay calm and composed in front of the goal when we are one-on-one with the keeper. I was very happy with the defensive performance. Rockhurst has a very athletic front line and and I thought we did a good job keeping them in front of us for the most part. A lot of positives to take from the game and grow from headed into a tough match [against] Jewell this Sunday."
With one minute remaining in the first overtime period, Richardson's shot was off the mark as the goalkeeper came out of the box, and
Ayana Weissenfluh's shot sailed over the crossbar from the beyond the left post position.
In the second overtime, both Richardson and Weissenfluh had another shot, but it was not meant to be on this night.
The women battle William Jewell at noon Sunday.
