USI snaps UMSL's undefeated conference streak

Two top volleyball programs shared the court Saturday afternoon in Evansville, Ind.

The 10-3 UMSL Tritons met the Southern Indiana Screaming Eagles in a matchup of the fittest, but the host Eagles, for the second time this season, outlasted the Tritons, this time in five sets:25-20, 23-25, 23-25, 25-21, 15-10.

The Eagles previously outlasted the Tritons at last month's USI Invitational, 3-1.

Saturday's loss snaps the Tritons' seven-game winning streak and their undefeated GLVC record (5-0) and pushed the Eagles' home record to 8-0.

Of course, after playing in Lebanon, Ill., less than 24 hours earlier, fatigue may have well factored into the equation for the Tritons, although if asked, they wouldn't subscribe to such a notion.

The Tritons never led in the opening set, but established a tempo in the second and third sets.

The match went back and forth in the latter four sets, and the Tritons even battled back from four points down in the second set.

Miscommunication on the front line enabled the Tritons to close out the third set, but being down five points midway through the fourth set simply was too much to overcome against a team that has yet to falter on its home court this season.

In the final set, the Tritons tied it up four times, and ripped off three consecutive points midway through, but it was not meant to be.

Stats from the match:

Kills: Charlotte Richards had 28, Olivia Klank added 10 and Alexa Rang tallied six.

Assists: Kaileen Herman had 42, Leah Luchinski had six and Megan Woll finished with three.

Aces: Herman had two, Kylie Adams had one and Rang finished with one.

Blocks: Karli Dean added five, Klank had two and Richards had one.

Digs: Woll added 34 to her resume, Herman had 17 and Rang authored 17.

The adage states that home is where the heart is, and the Tritons will be glad to sleep in their own beds Monday night, as they host Missouri S & T.
