ST. LOUIS, Mo. -- The University of Southern Indiana (9-5-2, 8-5-1) came into Friday's tilt against the UMSL Tritons (7-6-2, 5-5-2) on a six-game winning streak.
That streak came to a screeching halt against the Tritons, who netted their biggest, most impressive win of the season Friday with the 2-1 final in yet another downpour.
For the second time in six days, the Tritons had to move operations to the turf field, as the state of Missouri -- from the Ozarks to the MIssissippi River -- continues to be battered with rainfall.
The Tritons made sure to set the tone from the onset, owning possession and showcasing great ball movement and utilizing solid passing lanes.
Ayana Weissenfluh took the touch off an assist by
Jalyn Richardson 12:33 into the opening half.
That was all the scoring either team could muster in the first half.
The Eagles knotted up the score at one apiece 25 minutes into the second half, as Taylor Hall snuck in a shot just past Tritons keeper,
Brynne Qualley, and with the clock continuing to wind, it appeared it would be another overtime tilt for the Tritons.
But Richardson wouldn't oblige as she took the pass from
Jaycee Cotton down the near seam and stuck the shot with authority, as the ball found its way in the upper left part of the net with only 1:22 remaining in regulation.
UMSL closed out the match with 13 shots, nine of which were on goal.
Coach speak dictates that teams play their best soccer at the end of the season, and for the Tritons, this was the most impressive win of the season.
The Tritons close out the season Sunday for a Senior Day matchup against a tough McKendree team.
