It took five sets for the Lewis Flyers to claim its 11th GLVC title Sunday afternoon.
Lewis University ran away in the first set against the Tritons, 25-17.
But the Tritons quickly changed course, taking sets two and three: putting all the pressure on the Flyers' shoulders.
But Lewis responded with a win in the fourth set, forcing the fifth, where the Tritons erased a 12-4 lead.
Late in the fifth, momentum swung to UMSL, as they rattled off five straight points, and then three, but Lewis held on just long enough to win the title, besting UMSL 25-17, 18-25, 20-25, 25-23, 15-11.
How fitting it was the championship match came down to the No. 1 and No. 2 seeds.
No lead for Lewis was safe, as the Tritons erased deficit after deficit.
UMSL just ran out to steam and time in the end.
While momentum came and went, UMSL certainly had the momentum in the second and third sets, and midway through the fourth and even fifth sets.
The Tritons led eight times and tied it once in the fourth, and fought their way back from an eight-point deficit in the fifth, falling just shy.
This marked the second GLVC championship appearance by the Tritons.
Head coach
Ryan Young garnered his 200th career coaching win a few weeks ago, and he ends this season with a 204-122 career record.
The match also included more than 2,300 assists this year between UMSL's
Kaileen Herman and Lewis's Lauren Stenman.
Herman finished the match with 50 and Stenman added 49.
This marked the 21st appearance in the GLVC Tournament for the Tritons.
UMSL finishes the season 24-8 and now await their fate at the NCAA Tournament.
Selections will take place at 6:30 p.m. CST Monday evening via
ncaa.com, and given the resume the team produced this season, an at-large bid is not out of the question.
