UMSL nets Young his 200th career coaching win

The UMSL Tritons volleyball team officially has closed out the 2021 road trips.

Tuesday evening at Lindenwood, the Tritons made sure to go out in style as they defeated the Lions, 25-22, 25-23, 25-16.

With the win, the Tritons clinch the GLVC Central Division.

The win pushed UMSL to 20-7 on the season and 13-3 in the GLVC.

It also gave head coach Ryan Young his 200th career coaching win in Tritons red and gold.

Young took a few moments to reflect on his career, the caliber of players he has coached, and those mentors who helped shape him and his career.

"[200] means a lot to me. When you coach for a long time you are bound to hit some milestones. It really comes down to the quality of student-athletes I have been fortunate to coach during my time at UMSL. Including this team, I have coached a lot of talented kids and I wouldn't have got to 200 without them," he said.

The mentors Young has had on his trajectory provided double the impact, from a player to a coach: "The coaches I played for played a huge role in my success in learning the game from a player perspective but then as a coach as well. I have had the opportunity to work with a lot quality people and coaches which have helped me in many ways and I can't thank them enough." he added.

The Tritons trailed early but kills by Charlotte Richards and Paige Yoder righted the ship in the first set, as UMSL led by as many as five points and multiple junctures.

Richards has eclipsed 450 kills this season.

In the second set, the Tritons again trailed the Lions early.

Down 8-5, UMSL rambled off five points to the Lions' one, but the Lions extended their lead to 19-15.

But a Mya Elliott and Karlyn Hannewald kill turned the tide back to the Tritons' favor.

The Tritons closed out the set with back-to-back kills by Richards and Olivia Klank.

In the closing set, the Tritons could smell the victory as they never trailed.

Kaileen Herman had two late kills to help secure the win.

UMSL is home for the final two matches Friday and Saturday as they host Maryville and Truman State, respectively.

Senior Night is Friday and the Saturday match has been moved to a 2 p.m.start time instead of 3 p.m. to accommodate the basketball schedule.
