The UMSL Tritons hopped on the bus Friday and headed for Quincy University and took care of business as they defeated the host, 64-54.
After a slow start in the first half, the Tritons (7-2, 2-1) pulled away in the second, owning early leads of 34-32, 36-32, and 38-32.
Marty Jackson set high ball screens for Yaakema Rose, who began to score via dribble penetration. The duo owned the second half, as Jackson hit 15-footers and Rose went to the floor hard, hitting one from the line.
The reckless abandon was a precursor to Rose's performance, who led the team with 15 points, 6 rebounds, and four steals.
Rose connected for back-to-back buckets after the first media timeout. Balance then took over as the Tritons were rolling, 42-32.
Jackson hit another 15-footer and the defense tightened up on the block -- as Quincy watched multiple possessions stall down low.
In transition, the Hawks pushed down the floor and missed two 3-point attempts in an effort to close the gap, then Rose drove the lane and scored the put-back, 52-41.
The Hawks' Silas Crisler missed the trey and the Tritons soared in for the defensive board en route to the win.
Shane Wissink tossed in his 14 points and six boards and Jackson added his 14 points, 6 boards, and 3 blocks.
Jose Grubbs snared eight rebounds and finished with nine points.
The Tritons leave Illinois with 42 points in the paint.
UMSL is on the road at Parkside (Kenosha, Wisc.) on Dec. 20.Â
