Baseball Takes Game Two From Saints in Saturday Split

ST. LOUIS, MO. – The University of Missouri-St. Louis baseball team posted a 10-8 win at Maryville on Saturday in the second game of a doubleheader to earn the split after dropping the opener, 4-1.

The series concludes tomorrow with a single game at Noon.

Records: UMSL (8-22, 6-17 GLVC), Maryville (12-15, 10-9 GLVC)

Game 1: Maryville 4, UMSL 1
Holden Mayberry went the distance for the Tritons, allowing three earned runs on six hits, but the UMSL offense was limited to three hits. Mayberry struck out five and didn't issue a walk in his first complete game effort of the year.

Of the three UMSL hits, two were doubles, including one off the bat of John Hilpert that scored Brandon Olion after he led off the seventh with a double of his own.

Game 2: UMSL 10, Maryville 8
The Tritons jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning, taking advantage of two Maryville errors. Hilpert delivered an RBI single with two outs, while Clayton Stephens followed with a three-run double in that inning for the only two hits.

Stephens picked up his fourth RBI of the game in the fifth inning on a single, while Hilpert added an RBI single and Jared Bryant tallied an RBI double for the 8-0 lead.

The Saints scored three in the fifth and one in the sixth to pull within 8-6 before another Maryville error led to another two UMSL runs in the seventh.

The Saints wouldn't go away quietly, scoring twice in the seventh with two outs before leaving the bases loaded to end the game.

Both teams recorded eight hits, while the Saints were charged with five errors.

Hilpert was 2-for-4 at the plate with two RBI and three runs scored, while Stephens was 2-for-4 with four RBI. Mitch Green also scored three runs.

Blake Jones earned the win, going five innings in the start. He struck out six, walked three and allowed three runs, including two earned, on six hits. Jack Rhodes earned the save, getting the final out of the game.
