ST. LOUIS – The University of Missouri-St. Louis softball team closed out the home portion of its schedule on Sunday with a pair of one-run losses to Maryville. The Saints prevailed in the nine-inning opener, 2-1, before taking game two, 3-2.
Records: UMSL (15-21, 10-12 GLVC), Maryville (14-9, 12-6 GLVC)
Game 1: Maryville 2, UMSL 1 (9 inn.)
The Saints came out on top in the nine-inning pitcher's duel, taking advantage of a two-out UMSL error to score the winning run in the top of the ninth.
Sophomore
Annie Scaramuzzi was tagged with the loss, despite the complete game effort in which she allowed just two runs, including one earned, on seven hits, while striking out six and walking just two.
A solo home run by the Saints in the third inning stood as the lone run until junior
Corinne Daley tied the game with her team-leading ninth home run with one out in the bottom of the seventh. It was just the third long ball given up by Maryville's Alyssa Callans this season.
Callans struck out nine and walked four, while scattering five hits.
Freshman
Haley Remington recorded two hits and drew two walks.
Game 2: Maryville 3, UMSL 2
The Saints, again, capitalized on an UMSL miscue to get the winning run across the plate, scoring the game-winning, unearned run in the top of the seventh. The Tritons were charged with two errors in that frame as the Saints did not record a hit to put runners on the bases.
UMSL took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning when Towle scored on a wild pitch.
Maryville tied it in fourth with a solo home run, but the Tritons got the lead back in the bottom of the frame on a sac fly from Scaramuzzi. However, the Saints would knot the score again in the fifth.
Sophomore
Maddie Snemis had two of UMSL's five hits.
Maryville recorded six hits.
Junior
Mimi Bradley suffered the loss, striking out three, walking one and allowing three runs, including two earned.
