ST. LOUIS, Mo. -- The UMSL men's soccer team (3-4, 2-3) played a solid, physical, technical match for 80 minutes.
Unfortunately, regulation consists of 90 minutes, and with 10 minutes remaining in regulation, the Quincy Hawks (4-3-1, 2-2-1) found the net and scored the equalizer on Macker Little's goal, forcing overtime, where the Hawks escaped with the 3-2 GLVC win after Jack Rhead found the net with 1:38 to go in the opening extra period: shocking the Tritons and their fans on a hot, humid day in St. Louis.
The Tritons struck first on
Arman Kovac's goal (assist by
Bradley Fritsche) 2:54 seconds into the contest.
But the Hawks would not relent as a penalty kick goal by Aubrey Reis notted things up a 1 apiece nearly 11 minutes later.
Time of possession came and went for both teams, as both showed disrespect for their bodies, and players went airborne fighting for the ball and forcing added possessions on the offensive end.
At the 51:53 mark,
Garrett Bass took a beautiful touch pass from
Mylz Barrington to put the Tritons up, 2-1.
But, once again, the Hawks responded, on Little's goal, before the game-clincher by Rhead.
The Tritons are back in action Friday when they head to Rockhurst, followed by a road match two days later at William Jewell.
The team returns home Friday, Oct. 8, when they host a tough Drury Panthers team.
