Story Links

ST. LOUIS – The University of Missouri-St. Louis men's soccer team rallied for a 2-1 win over McKendree in the season finale for both teams at Don Dallas Field on Sunday afternoon.

With Missouri S&T's 3-2 win over Indianapolis and Truman State's 2-0 win over William Jewell the Miners and Bulldogs secured the final two spots in the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament.

The Tritons trailed 1-0 at halftime after the Bearcats (5-5-6, 3-4-5) scored in the 15th minute. Matteo Schubert played a short corner kick to Gabe Hallsten. Hallsten then crossed a pass to Tony Bodul just outside the 18-yard box. Bodul wound up and fired it past Austin Reis for his second goal of the season.

UMSL tied the game 10:25 into the second half as Arman Kovac dribbled into the box and fired a shot from 16 yards out that Matt King made a diving save on. King was unable to hold onto the ball and Mylz Barrington was on the doorstep to put it in for his first goal of the season.

The Tritons had a chance to take the lead about 10 minutes later as a handball was called in the penalty area giving UMSL a penalty kick. Kovac took the kick and shot it towards the left post. King made the initial save as the ball squirted free but he was able to recover it before it crossed the goal line.

The Tritons scored the go-ahead goal in in the 69th minute. Bradley Fritsche won the ball in the McKendree end and chipped it ahead to Quinton Garofalo who was able to chip it past King for his first career goal.

The Bearcats had a chance at the equalizer with 0:29 left but Reis made the save to preserve the victory.

UMSL finished the contest with a 10-8 advantage in shots including 5-4 in shots on goal. McKendree had a 6-4 edge in corner kicks.

The Tritons wrap their season with a record of 5-8-3, 4-6-2 GLVC.
